The exponential growth of the beauty industry in Uganda continues to create a vacuum of skilled and professional fashionistas and cosmetologists in the country. The Department of Cosmetology and Fashion aims at equipping graduates with the right skills to gear up for their careers in the beauty and creative domains as entrepreneurs. We do this by fine-tuning the students’ skills for improved brand value to stand out in the creative job market.

Academic Programs

  1. Bachelor of Fashion and Cosmetology
  2. Diploma in Fashion and Apparel Design

Research

We have an ongoing research project entitled “UTILISATION OF TEXTILE-APPAREL WASTE AS A PATH TO CIRCULARITY IN THE UGANDAN FASHION INDUSTRY”.

This project which has been funded by Kyambogo University Competitive Research Grant has embarked on ensuring a reduction in the amount of garment industry offcuts that make it to the landfills in Uganda. In this approach, we are targeting the offcuts that are left over after the garment patterns have been cut. These will then be re-processed into virgin yarn and fabrics.

The study is 85% practical and 15% theoretical. It exclusively focuses on the world of work. Among the key activities handled during the study is the Fashion show (Figure 1) where all the students are given a chance to showcase different articles done over the course of their studies.
