Welcome to the Department of Hotel and Industrial Catering (H&IC). The Department is better described as a place to be for all that are aspiring to have a great start, progress and Career development in Hospitality & Culinary Studies. Upon admission to any of our programmes, you are assured of getting to learn from one of the best learning environment and being mentored well selected experienced (both in teaching and practice) teaching staff. We treasure our clients especially the students and their affairs particularly academic are always our priority. Using the available facilities (food preparation demonstration rooms, demonstration restaurant) which we continue improving with emphasis on improving competences (Knowledge, Skills & Attitude) acquisition. Successful and meaningful hospitality and culinary training greatly relies on appropriate competence acquisition as trusted way of making graduates employable in the competitive world of world of work and entrepreneurship. About Us
The Department of Hotel and Institutional Catering (H&IC) is a creation after the restructuring of the University academic units in 2021, formerly a section in the Department of Human Nutrition and Home Economics under the Faculty of Vocational Studies.
Upon restructuring the School of Vocational Studies (SoVs) was formed or created from the department of Human Nutrition and Home Economics with four Departments; Department of Hotel & Institutional Catering (H&IC), Department of Family life & Consumer Studies. (Home Economics), Department of Nutritional Sciences & Dietetics. Department of Cosmetology & Fashion.
Current Academic Programmes
The department is charged with running the following academic programmes
- Diploma in Hotel & Institutional catering (DHIC) and Evening programme
- Bachelor of Hotel and Institutional Catering (BHIC). Day and evening programme
The training of Hospitality and Culinary related programmes at Kyambogo University can be traced back in 1996 and 1997 when the Certificate in Hotel and Institutional Catering (CHIC) and Diploma in Hotel and Institutional Catering (DHIC) were rolled out respectively. Subsequently in August 2015, the pioneer students were admitted for the Bachelor programme in Hotel & Institutional catering (BHIC) a Day & Evening programme. Since then, these programmes have had consistent and growing numbers of students admitted and graduated from both direct entry (A’ level applicants) and the certificate and diploma entry scheme apart from the Certificate one which was scrapped
New Academic Programmes
New academic programmes have also been developed and are currently undergoing approval process and shall be rolled out soon. They include;
- Masters in Hospitality and Tourism (MHT) (
- Postgraduate Diploma in Culinary Art (PGDCA)
- Bachelor of Vocational Studies in Hotel and Tourism with Education
Utilizing the University facilities and competent staff the graduates of these programmes have been equipped with the required competences ( Knowledge, Skill & Attitude) and resilience to fit and work in the hospitality in Uganda, East African region and globally.
